How to make your own fertilizer

The prices of fertilizer in Zambia rise regularly. And if you don’t enrich your soil, you won’t be able to grow anything.

Most people opt for compost manure. This is rotten plant and animal waste.

But if you don’t have the time to wait for composting, then you need to try this fertilizer recipe and save yourself a great deal of money.

The key to healthy crops is healthy soil

Plants need phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium, sulfur, calcium and magnesium from the soil. These essential nutrients help them to thrive. The best ingredient in my recipe is Epsom salt. Epsom salt is Magnesium Sulfate.  It helps seeds germinate, makes plants grow bushier, produces more flowers, increases chlorophyll production and deters pests.

My favorite fertilizer recipe

Ingredients

60 ml of Epsom salts
2 cups of urine (yes, urine!), andfertilizer
2 cups of wood ash

Instructions
Mix these ingredients in a 20-liter bucket.
Fill the rest of the bucket about half way with grass clippings, pruned green leaves, or even green weeds pulled right out of the ground.
Fill the bucket to the top with water and allow the mixture to steep/rest for three days
Strain the tea or decant after steeping.
Before you use this solution, dilute by 50% by mixing half water and half tea into your favorite watering can.
Apply this wonderful mix by pouring it directly onto the soil around your plants.

Please note: Remember to only steep for three days. This will help you prevent fermentation, which you want to avoid. Fermented materials will smell bad, and their pH can change rapidly, so it’s important to stick with a three-day steeping, and then use the concentrate within a day or two.
